How much does it cost to hire an Interior Photographer in the UAE?

When planning an interior photography or videography project in the UAE, it’s essential to balance your budget with your needs. While it’s tempting to cut costs, remember that the quality of the photographer’s work can significantly affect how your project or business is perceived. A well-executed interior shoot is an investment in your brand or listing, and working with an experienced professional can make all the difference.
By understanding the factors that influence pricing, you can choose the right professional for your project and ensure that you get high-quality results that showcase your interior spaces in the best light possible.
1. Scope of the Project
The size and complexity of your project play a significant role in determining the price.
Number of Spaces or Rooms: A 1 bedroom apartment and a 6 bedroom villa take a different amount of time to shoot. Not only is the photographer capturing wide-angle shots of each space, but close-up details as well. In cases where video is included, this will add to how much time the photographer needs to be on site. How much time is needed at the shoot contributes directly to how much the shoot will cost.
Deliverables: The number of photographs and videos (or reels) you need from your photographer will determine the price as well. The more deliverables you have, or the more complex a deliverable is, the more time will be needed both at the shoot and during post-production. Also, think of the deliverables as products; the more products you want, the more it will cost.
Video vs. Photography: Videography usually involves more time, equipment, and post-production work compared to photography, meaning that it generally comes at a higher cost. The length of the video, and even the type of video (interview, walk-through, before & after, etc.) impact how long is needed to capture and edit the footage, which impacts the cost.
Kayla Simoné Photography offers packages that include different shoot durations and deliverables and can recommend the right one for you if you share the location of the project, number of spaces/rooms that need to be covered, and confirm if you need photo, video, or both.
2. Location and Travel
The location of the property plays a role in determining the price as travel time and distance is considered in the cost of the shoot. In the UAE, properties located in more remote areas or in an emirate outside of where the photographer is based incur additional travel costs.
Additionally, locations with strict regulations, permits, or access restrictions may involve extra planning and coordination, which can also impact the final pricing.
3. Experience and Specialization of the Photographer
The level of expertise and the quality of the portfolio of the photographer or videographer directly impacts pricing. More experienced professionals, particularly those with a strong portfolio, well-known clients, or industry recognition, tend to charge higher rates.
Expertise: A seasoned photographer knows how to capture a space in the right lighting, composition, and angles to showcase interiors in the best possible way, which adds value to your project.
Specialization: Photographers or videographers who specialize in interiors often charge more than general photographers because they bring a refined set of skills and knowledge specific to architectural photography.
Just because someone has a professional camera, doesn’t make them knowledgable on the specific type of photography you need. A few designers I’ve worked with have shared that their previous experience with general or new photographers resulted in images where the design got lost. You need someone who has an eye for your craft so that the photos and videos they deliver to you elevate your work and expertise.
“I’ve worked with many photographers, but you have made all the difference.”
4. Equipment Used
The requirements for a shoot determine what equipment is needed.
Professional-grade Cameras & Specialized Gear: Professional-grade cameras with high resolution capture the fine details of interior spaces, but they come with a higher cost. In some cases, specialized gear - like a drone - is required to get certain views. In the case of video, audio equipment would be required as well. The more equipment needed, or the more specialized it needs to be, the more it will impact the cost of the shoot.
Storage: Digital files can be corrupted, or lost for various reasons, and it’s important that there is a system in place to prevent this from affecting client work as much as possible. This comes at a cost as professional photographers will invest in storage and back-up solutions to ensure the protection of the photo and video files from your projects.
Software: Professional post-production software is often licensed to photographers on a monthly basis, and therefore incurs a continuous cost that the photographer would consider when quoting for a shoot.
5. Post-Production Work
Editing and post-production are non-optional steps in creating high quality, professional images or videos and reels. The level of post-processing required can significantly impact the cost.
Photo Editing: Interior photography often involves extensive editing, including color correction, geometry correction, distortion removal, and enhancing the image to ensure the final product meets industry standards.
Video Editing: For videography, editing is a much more involved process. It may include sound design, color grading, transitions, special effects, and adding text overlays, all of which take time and expertise.
Retouching and Revisions: If you require multiple revisions or additional retouching to remove any unwanted or distracting elements, this will usually incur additional costs.
6. Licensing and Usage Rights
In the UAE, ownership of any image or video files created belongs to the photographer. By commissioning a shoot, you as the client purchase license to use the images and videos for purposes which must be shared with your photographer so that they can give you the pricing for the relevant usage licensing. If the photographs or videos are for personal use, the pricing may be lower than if they are intended for commercial or marketing purposes.
Exclusive Rights: If you’re purchasing exclusive rights to the images or videos, meaning they can’t be used by other clients, this may increase the price.
Commercial Use: Images used in advertisements, websites, or promotional materials often come with higher costs due to the potential exposure and longevity of the use.
You can refer to UAE Federal Law No. 7 of 2002 for more information on ownership and copyright laws in the UAE. I will be writing a post about this soon as well.
7. Turnaround Time
Urgency can also impact the cost of your project. Your photographer will share their usual timeline for delivering the images and videos, and if you need the photos or videos delivered in a quicker timeframe, it is likely that a rush fee may apply for expedited services. This is because the photographer has to adjust their schedule or work overtime to meet your deadlines.
8. Additional Services
Some photographers and videographers offer value-added services that can affect the overall pricing:
Staging and Styling: If you require a stylist to arrange furniture, décor, or other elements to make the space look more appealing, this service will add to the cost.
Strategy and planning: Some photographers offer advanced services like social media strategy and planning to ensure the content they create for you aligns with your marketing goals.
Team: And let’s not forget that not all shoots can be done by one person alone. In some cases, especially where video is involved, additional people like a sound engineer, or second shooter are required. This will impact the cost significantly.
Conclusion: Finding the Right Balance
Make sure to discuss all aspects of your project upfront with the photographer or videographer, including the scope of work, location, required deliverables if there is anything specific, and timelines, so you can get a clear idea of the costs involved. Make sure to ask for clarity on anything you’re not sure of so that you are not surprised by anything down the line.
